Guide des tailles des skis : comment choisir la longueur idéale ?

Ski size guide: how to choose the ideal length?

Choosing the right ski size is essential to fully enjoy your days on the mountain. Skis that are too short will lack stability, while skis that are too long will be difficult to maneuver. The ideal length depends on several criteria: your height, your weight, your skill level, and your type of skiing.

This guide will help you understand the main rules for finding your perfect skis.

How to choose your ski size?

1. Based on your height

The general rule is simple:
👉 your skis should measure between –5 cm and –15 cm shorter than your height.

- Beginner skier: opt for shorter skis (–10 to –15 cm).

- Intermediate/advanced skier: choose a size close to yours (–5 to –10 cm).

- Expert/freeride skier: you can go up to your height, or even +5 cm for more stability at high speeds.

2. Based on your practice

  • Piste: shorter skis = maneuverability.

  • Freeride / powder: longer skis for floating on snow.

  • Freestyle: slightly shorter skis or your height, for more control in tricks.

  • Ski touring: slightly shorter skis to facilitate ascents, but stable on descents.

3. Based on your weight

A lighter skier can go down one size, while a heavier skier will gain stability with longer skis.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing solely based on height, without considering the type of skiing.

  • Taking skis that are too long as a beginner → more tiring and difficult to control.

  • Neglecting your weight and actual skill level.

Expert tips

  • If you're hesitating between two sizes, choose the shorter one for maneuverability, or the longer one for stability.

  • For ski touring, consider lightweight models, as weight is as important as size.
